Mereba, the Southern-bred, alternative R&B singer-songwriter known for her introspective lyrics and versatile musical style, has announced her new album titled “The Breeze Grew A Fire,” set for release on February 14, 2025. This album marks her first project on Secretly Canadian and follows her critically acclaimed debut, “The Jungle Is the Only Way Out,” and the “AZEB” EP.
“The Breeze Grew A Fire” is described as a journey of self-understanding, where Mereba reconnects with her inner child and the core relationships that shape her identity. This album explores themes of motherhood, nostalgia, resilience, and personal transformation, blending folk, R&B, and soul with a narrative that’s both intimate and universal. It’s an ode to the steadying influence of love and friendship amidst life’s challenges.
Mereba has co-produced “The Breeze Grew A Fire” with Sam Hoffman, her longtime collaborator. The album’s production is noted for its organic, DIY approach, reflecting Mereba’s personal journey back to herself, influenced by her experiences in Atlanta, L.A., Addis Ababa, and Greensboro. This project also showcases her growth as both an artist and a mother, with influences from her Ethiopian heritage subtly woven into the music.
“Counterfeit” was released as the first single, accompanied by a music video, setting the thematic tone for the album with its message of self-authenticity and resilience.
